[ 02/04/2010 ]

CEO, Singapore Sports Council

Mr Oon Jin Teik was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Sports Council on 26 April 2004.

A former Olympian (member of Singapore swim team at 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles), Mr Oon’s passion for and understanding of the Singapore sports system, combined with his business background and experience, helped him to pioneer groundbreaking initiatives in the Singapore sports sector over the last six years.

In sports participation, Mr Oon has refocused the organisation’s strategy to get more people participating in sports by emphasising targeted demographic segment marketing, service excellence, product innovation and partnerships with service providers.

Two years ago, the SSC launched the Let’s Play brand, a highly successful campaign that has helped change the way Singaporeans perceive, play and enjoy sports. Let’s Play focuses on the social aspects of sports as an enjoyable way to spend time with friends and family.

Under Mr Oon’s leadership, a structured system to professionalise the management, governance and performance of the National Sports Associations (NSAs) was introduced across all 64 NSAs. He has overseen the introduction of a comprehensive high performance framework that addresses the entire life cycle of an athlete’s development pathway. Coaches and officials also receive ongoing professional development support, and new youth coaching and officiating programmes are online as well.

In sports business, the SSC also has partnered the Singapore Economic Development Board to develop a comprehensive blueprint that will develop the Singapore sports industry into a S$2 billion industry providing 20,000 jobs by the year 2015. The SSC also works with many other government agencies to deliver sports programming to the country’s growing sports community.

As an active member of the larger sporting fraternity, he holds various key appointments in the Singapore Youth Olympics Games Organising Committee; Singapore Tourism Board’s Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix Project Working Committee and National Youth Council. He is also a Board member of the Singapore National Olympic Committee, Singapore Sports School and Health Promotion Board.

Mr Oon holds a Bachelor in Chemical Engineering and a Master in Business Administration in General Management from Brigham Young University, Utah, US. Mr Oon held a series of regional leadership positions in the National Starch & Chemical Company and the DuPont where he held profit and loss responsibilities across multiple industry markets.

He has attended management courses at the Wharton Business School, Kellogg Business School, DuPont’s Leadership and Management Programme, and the Singapore government’s Leadership & Management Programme (LAP). Apart from sporting activities, Mr Oon also plays the piano and has played the violin for the Singapore Philharmonic Orchestra. He is married with three children.
