Why is it held in Barcelona?

Simply because Barcelona is the ideal location for the event. In the wake of the 1992 Olympic Games, preparations for which included an ambitious urban and seafront renovation programme, Barcelona consolidated its reputation as an international capital.
Barcelona has a long tradition in sports and leisure activities, a fact underlined by its many sports clubs and organisations, some of which are over a hundred years old. It is also home to superb sporting infrastructures (the Olympic Stadium, Camp Nou, Montmelo Racetrack etc) and plays host to an increasing number of major events (the Spanish grand prix, the Condé de Godo Tennis Open, the Barcelona World Race, the 2003 Swimming World Championships and the 2010 European Athletics Championships).

A city with a strong sporting identity, Barcelona is also an important economic, financial, industrial and cultural centre. Open to the world, Barcelona is known for its dynamism, avant-gardism, and its modern outlook. The capital of the region of Catalonia, the city has always protected and valued its historical heritage, traditions and language. Multicultural and global, Barcelona reflects the essential spirit of the Global Sports Forum better than any other city.
